New pre-evacuation warnings for Soberanes Fire

****Residents in the Rancho San Carlos, White Rock and San Rancho Clemente areas are asked to be prepared to leave immediately if a mandatory evacuation is ordered.

The fire, which began about 8:30 a.m. Friday, has scorched 10,262 acres and is 5 percent contained.

Roughly 1,650 homes were threatened as of Sunday morning, Cal Fire officials said. Area closures

Palo Colorado and Western Ridge roads at Highway 1 were closed Saturday. Toro Park closed** Sunday to allow Cal Fire to use the park as a base camp.

Evacuation warnings**

Rancho San Carlos, White Rock and San Rancho Clemente are under a pre-evacuation warning.

An evacuation warning was issued for the entire Carmel Highlands area Saturday.

Big Sur residents in the Palo Colorado Canyon neighborhood evacuated Friday evening. Those residents are waiting to hear when they can return to their homes, as of Sunday afternoon.


A temporary shelter has been established at Carmel Middle School on Carmel Valley Road. The SPCA for Monterey County is also there, helping to take care of people and their pets.
