Monterey Conference Center converted to evacuation shelter MONTEREY, Calif. (KION)

The Monterey Conference Center is now a fully-staffed evacuation shelter.

The conference center opened Friday as an evacuation center but is now equipped to take in a large amount of evacuees fleeing fires burning in Monterey County.

150 cots and blankets were brought in from the Marina Veterans Transition Center late Friday night. The evacuation shelter has since received 6,000 blankets, 3,000 cots and 2,400 comfort kits from the state.

The conference center will provide sleeping accommodations and meals for evacuees. Red Cross services and county staff will also be at the shelter to assist with evacuees who need any additional services.

The Monterey Conference Center is located at 1 Portola Plaza in Monterey. It's the third evacuation shelter in the county.

Monterey County is also operating evacuation shelters at Carmel Middle School at 4380 Carmel Valley Road in Carmel and Sherwood Hall at 940 North Main Street in Salinas.

An evacuation center can also be found at the King City Library in King City. That center has snacks, water and charging devices and visitors can find local resources and support. That site is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For evacuation information, view the county's interactive evacuation map.
